SDW is the text format used by StarWriter and StarOffice up to version 5. The story began in 1984, when 16-year-old Marco Börries founded Star Division in Lüneburg and began marketing the word processor developed by his friend
Frank Aeffner. In 1999, Sun Microsystems took over the company, released the source code and thus laid the foundation for OpenOffice. You can find out more about the history of SDW and Aeffner in my article on SDW files

Why convert SDW to DOC?

SDW files use the OLE2 format, similar to classic DOC files from Microsoft Word. Despite this similarity, Word does not open them directly. Anyone wishing to use old StarWriter documents with Microsoft Office or send them to recipients without LibreOffice will need to convert them. DOC is the obvious choice here – the format is backwards compatible right back to Word 97 and opens on practically any Windows computer.
